Senate Bill 135, a bill that allows Colorado to use all revenue it already collects to fund K-12 education instead of paying some as TABOR refunds, is supported by the Colorado Education Association, Stand for Children, the Colorado Children’s Campaign, Colorado Rural Schools Alliance, and the Colorado Association of School Boards, the Public Education and Business Coalition. The bill aims to address chronic school funding shortages, which have led to chronic shortages across Colorado for over three decades. Critics argue that this measure is a backdoor attack on taxpayers disguised as helping kids, but it does not raise the tax rate. It does not mean Coloradans will pay more than they do today. The measure would provide stable, predictable increases in education funding of up to 2 percent annually over 10 years and mandates a yearly public audit to verify where every dollar goes. It also reduces pressure on the broader state budget by leaving more funds available for priorities like Medicaid, behavioral health, infrastructure, and public safety.
