The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the merger of Nexstar Media Group and Tegna, approving the merger. The merged company will own multiple stations in Denver, where Nexstar owns FOX31 KDVR and KWGN, and Tenga currently owns 9NEWS KUSA and KTVD. The deal required approval from the FCC as it had to waive rules limiting how many local stations one company could own. It was also approved by the Justice Department, but attempts to independently confirm this were unsuccessful. Attorneys general in eight states and DirecTV filed lawsuits to block the merger, arguing that it would increase prices for consumers and stifle local journalism. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office announced they had joined several other states in a lawsuit to block this merger, citing the increased reach the merged company would have.
