A study by Hellman's has proven that mayonnaise can be used as an instrument, following a 25-year internet meme by the starfish Patrick on "SpongeBob Squarepants". The research was conducted by Dr. Rachael Durkin, Head of Global Music Technologies at Northumbria University, and her team of experts. They found that mayo can be classified in more ways than many conventional instruments and could potentially serve as a material in instrument construction. The study also found that playing with mayonnaising for its sound alters it at a physical level. Hellman’s partnered with music content creator Andy Arthur Smith to create an original track composed entirely from mayonnaese-generated sounds. The findings are now available to stream.
