A Jefferson County egg farm has spilled thousands of gallons of wastewater amid an outbreak of bird flu. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) became aware of the spill through a complaint to a conservation warden. Daybreak Foods reported that an employee improperly discharged between 3,000 to 4,200 gallons of water from washing eggs at its Cold Spring Egg Farm on Feb. 27. The DNR collected samples from a drainage ditch and Spring Creek near the farm’s production site, which tested positive for bird flu on February 27, and additional samples since then have tested negative for the virus. The company has been forced to cull and compost millions of birds. Both the farm and DNR continue to investigate and respond to the spill.
