Christine Skinner, a retired professor and nurse from York, was diagnosed with rectal cancer two years ago, after noticing changes in her bowel habits and feeling uncertain about her diagnosis due to her lack of obvious signs of the disease. She was offered the chance to participate in a clinical trial funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research that could improve treatment for people with rectural cancer. The APHRODITE trial, led by Professor Ane Appelt at the University of Leeds and Professor Simon Gollins at Bangor University, aims to give people a higher dose of radiotherapy than the standard to increase the likelihood of cancer completely disappearing completely. Following her diagnosis, Christine was given a range of treatment options including surgery and a stoma bag, but instead chose to participate. She is now cancer-free and after completing her treatment, she welcomed her third grandchild two years after her treatment.
