Galadriel Olson, a former child of the 1980s and 1990s, has opened a throwback video rental store, Way Cool Video, in Lakewood, Washington, with a library of 2,000 titles and snacks for sale. The business model is simple: $3 to rent most films, five days to return, and the cost of return is $3. Video rental stores have been on decline since the early 2000s, accelerated by the dawn of Netflix and the ubiquity of internet access and streaming. This has led to a boom for in-person movie collecting, with DVD and Blu-ray sales declining only nine percent last year compared to a decline of 20 percent in 2023 and 2024. The only remaining Blockbuster store in the U.S. is in Bend, Oregon.
