Yankees answer to keeping Rule 5 pitcher who was DFA’d before debut

The New York Yankees have been dealing with the first time in decades that the team has had a player designated for assignment from the Rule 5 draft without making his debut in the majors. The team had no experience above Double-A and felt they could buy more time by relying on four starters and an expanded bullpen in the first two weeks. Manager Aaron Boone said the decision to drop Winquest was made due to the team's lack of a fifth starter and several off-day commitments. The decision was made when Luis Gil was recalled and someone in the bullpen had to go. Despite this, Winquest is likely to return to the Cardinals' organization once he clears waivers, which is probable.
