Sergio Fraire, 30, is accused of murdering 57-year-old schoolteacher Arti Varma and her 25-year daughter, a noted mental health advocate, in Burbank. The attack left Varma, a first-grade teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School, and their daughter, in critical condition. Fraire was taken into custody at a residence 16 hours after the attack, and evidence related to the crime was recovered. He was booked for murder and attempted murder, pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The victims were identified as Varma's daughter, but their condition has improved and is now stable.
