House Republicans have introduced two data privacy bills, the SECURE Data Act and the GUARD Financial Data Act, aimed at protecting personal and financial data and potentially overrising state laws. The bills aim to provide Americans more control over their data and set clear rules. This comes after a failed attempt to pass a comprehensive federal privacy bill last Congress, which was stalled due to disagreements over pre-emption of state laws and the ability of individuals to sue for privacy violations. The SECURE Act includes data minimization rules, a requirement for data collectors to obtain opt-in consent for sensitive data, and updating the existing Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act to protect consumer financial data in the digital age.
