Column: Handing government unions more power breaks governor’s promises

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger has promised to make Virginia more affordable for families and improve the quality of government schools and other public services. However, it is increasingly likely that Spanberger and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly will pass a Big Labor scheme that would significantly increase the cost of living for ordinary Virginians and lower the effectiveness of these services. Currently, there is no state law forcing any government employer to engage in any form of bargaining with any labor union, but government union operatives are eager to make this a mandatory monopoly-bargaining state. The Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate recently approved bills that would grant sweeping monopoly powers to state and local government union bosses across the commonwealth. However these proposals have been met with opposition from grassroots right-to-work supporters and local public officials, including Democrats and Republicans.
