The image was taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LRO), a system of three cameras and one of the seven instruments aboard LRO. The LRO's primary mission is to create a 3D map of the lunar surface to identify future landing sites and resources, and to explore the radiation environment. The image is the NASA Science Image of the Month for March 2026.
