NBA defends 11 percent increase in foul calls during playoffs

The NBA has seen an 11% increase in personal fouls per game in the playoffs, on pace to be one of the largest in NBA history. Despite criticism from players and coaches, NBA senior vice president of referee development and training, Monty McCutchen, stated that refereeing doesn't fundamentally change in the postseason. The league's goal is to create an aggressive but restrained environment that doesn't escalate to rough. The increase in foul calls from the regular season to the playoffs is the 66th time in the NBA's 80-year history.
