The second Trump administration has seen significant changes in immigration detention, including an increase in the number of immigrants detained and a plan to detain more people in converted warehouses. The federal government has stated it needs more space for "the largest deportation effort in American history" and plans for this are met with opposition. The increase in detentions, along with increased arrests and restrictions on requests for release on bond, has led to concerns about the safety and medical needs of children in detention. At least 31 people have died in ICE detention last year, marking the highest total since 2004. Critics have long argued that family detention is harmful to children and should be stopped.
