British police did not pause camera use because they caught ‘too many’ Black people

Essex Police in Britain have suspended the use of facial recognition cameras due to a potential bias study, contrary to online claims that it was due to the cameras catching too many Black people. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge, found that the cameras were more likely to correctly identify Black participants than participants from other ethnic groups and that men were also more accurately identified than women. Essex Police confirmed that it had decided to halt the deployment of the cameras in March 2026 following the study. The force also revised its policies and procedures to use the technology to identify and arrest criminals.
