Jazz singer Ana Hoffman, known as The BLCK Madonna, has been redefining the meaning of Madonna, a term used to express reverence towards a woman who carries herself with dignity, authority, and respect. Hoffman, who grew up in Texas and Ghana, chose her moniker as an invitation for other women to claim their own authority. She also discovered over 300 black Madonnas painted in churches all over Europe. Hoffman's love of music is evident from her set at Drai's Supper Club in the Meatpacking District. Her new album will be released soon.
