Don Henley, the former member of the Eagles, has written numerous songs about Henry David Thoreau, author of 1817-1862, whose words have influenced his life and lyrics since his discovery in the late '60s. Henley and Ken Burns executive produced a new 3-hour PBS documentary, Henry DavidThoreau: The subject of the documentary, which airs March 30 and 31. The author's philosophy, which includes nonviolence and nature, influenced Henley's life and songwriting. He founded the Walden Woods Project in 1990 and co-founded the Caddo Lake Institute in 1993 to protect the wetlands near his hometown of Linden. The project is still in its 36th year in its run and aims to buy one last 36-acre parcel of land to preserve the original site of Walden.
