A California Republican-backed voter ID ballot initiative is gaining momentum amid concerns about confidence in the state's election system. A 2025 poll from UC Berkeley found that among Republican voters, 61% were not very or not at all confident in California’s election system, and 74% believe fraud is prevalent in state elections. Assemblyman Carl DeMaio supports two reform provisions included in the initiative, including mandatory audits of voters' citizenship and voter ID requirements. The initiative has over 1.3 million signatures, exceeding the 875,000 required for it to qualify for the ballot in November.
