The Salem School Committee has voted to rename the Carlton Innovation School and Saltonstall School, named after 19th-century student, abolitionist and lecturer Sarah Parker Remond. The renaming will be effective on July 1. Remond, born in 1826, was expelled from Salem High School when a group of parents petitioned for a policy of segregation, which was later overturned in 1844. She became a physician and advocated for civil rights and supported the Union efforts in Europe during the Civil War. The merger of the two schools aims to close a projected $4.5 million to $5 million budget gap for next year and consolidate resources long-term.
