Giants pass rusher Abdul Carter has announced that he plans to change his jersey number from No. 51 to No. 11, following a year after Lawrence Taylor rejected a proposal to wear the retired No. 56 jersey, which was last worn by Taylor. Carter initially wanted to wear that number, but it was later rejected by Taylor, who suggested another number. Phil Simms initially offered to let Carter wear his retired No 11, but his family overruled this, allowing him to stay retired by the Giants. Carter eventually settled on No 51 after an up-and-down rookie year that saw him discipline twice for violating team rules.
