Utah Rep. Celeste Maloy has stated that distrust in American institutions is the biggest threat to America, with her campaign focusing on the issue of government overreach, wars, water, and debt. She argues that Congress needs to take a more proactive approach on these issues. The national debt surpassed the GDP for the first time since World War II, meaning all income, investments, and output of all Americans in a year could not pay off the publicly held debt, which has now hit $31.27 trillion. If Congress does nothing, Social Security benefits will automatically fall by 23% in 2033, impacting 71 million individuals by an average of $18,000 per retired couple. Maloy argues that a congressional course correction on spending is urgent. She also highlighted the potential for long-term reforms to stabilize Social Security, like slowly raising the retirement age or raising the cap on taxable income.
