The Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TCLA), four school administrators, two former coaches, and two current coaches are accused of forcing 80 students to do over 400 push-ups, leaving 20 of the children with potentially life-threatening injuries. The lawsuit alleges that the school attempted to cover up the incident, starting with a "jersey mix-up" caused by two students sharing the same jersey number. The students claim that they were forced to do between 300 to 420 push-up without water, rest or breaks. The pushups resulted in 20 students being hospitalized for two to seven days and many were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can cause kidney and organ damage. The attorney for the victims, Ryan Johnson, called the situation "one of the most appalling cases of institutional child abuse we have ever seen."
