Darien's RTM has approved an ordinance for the abatement of illicit sump pump discharge into public sewers, with fines totalling $250. The proposal had faced criticism from some residents, who argued that it was unnecessary costs, fairness, and intrusiveness. The Darien Sewer Commission has identified inflow and infiltration (I&I) into the town's sanitary sewer as adding clean water to the system that should not be there, contributing to the problem. This I&I is costing Darien sewer users over $1 million annually just in processing fees. The ordinance was passed with 67 votes, 10 votes, and two abstentions.
