The Verge's senior reviewer, Senior Reviews Editor and Senior Reviewer, has found it difficult to obtain a $4,400 Samsung TriFold phone from the grey market on eBay. The phone, which has been out of stock in the US since January 30th (retail price: $2,899), has been difficult to buy as many as one from Samsung. The article suggests that while the TriFolds have been on sale longer in other parts of the world than they are currently available, they are not widely available in other countries. The Verge's review unit was purchased without a review unit from the manufacturer, and the phone was shipped from Scottsdale, Arizona, not Hong Kong, as the original tracking number indicated. However, the reviewer discovered that the phone had already been pre-set up without a SIM and was unable to connect it to a SIM. The author suspects that this scarcity effect is a feature of offering only a handful of phones at once, not a bug. The reviewer also suspects that the company does not send phones from the factory like this.
