The last day of the legislative session ends at midnight on Thursday. Georgia's House Speaker, Brian Kemp, is focusing on passing the $38 billion state budget, which has been debated by the House and Senate for weeks. Kemp's office is also involved in ensuring fiscal sanity during a year when many lawmakers are running for higher office or reelection. The budget also needs to fund the Georgia Literacy Act, which will provide $70 million. If the two parties fail to reach a budget agreement, the governor may have to call for a special session.
