A 'corporate welfare' claim vs Walmart and Amazon over worker benefits

A report by Sarah Kohn has found that over half of these firms reported 2024 median pay levels that would make a family of three eligible for food benefits under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and for government-subsidized Medicaid health insurance benefits. While these companies' CEOs earned hundreds of times as much per year, these calculations were developed. The study suggests that these companies are providing subsidies to big businesses who have access to a large pool of labor at less-than-living wages. Kohn argues that having a business model heavily reliant on part-time workers is a choice, as well as avoiding paying full benefits under Obamacare. However, she also questions whether people are working part time because they want to work part time.
