ION’s push into PWHL another big win for women’s sports coverage

ION, a television network that has been instrumental in women's sports coverage, is set to air the first nationally televised Professional Women’s Hockey League game, featuring the New York Sirens against the Montréal Victoire in Detroit. The move is part of a larger effort by Scripps Sports, which purchased ION in 2020 and used this time to evaluate the strategy for the network, which now reaches 126 million households. Brian Lawlor, president of Scrippes Sports, credits ION's strategy to acquire WNBA rights and create a first-of-its-kind franchise night, consisting of national doubleheaders. The network's initial three-year deal with the WNBA began in 2023, the eve of Caitlin Clark's senior season at Iowa and her move to the pros the following year.
