The North Atlantic right whale population, one of the world's most critically endangered whale species, has experienced a baby boom this year, with 23 calves born during the calving season from November to April, the highest number recorded since 2009. The New England Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life observed nearly 10 years between calves for some females, and 18 of these mothers have given birth in the past six years. Survey teams from Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas monitored the caleding grounds throughout the season. An estimated 380 North Atlantic Right whales remain on the planet, including about 70 reproductively active females. The Marineland Right Whale Project in Massachusetts has raised $23,000 for conservation efforts for the critically endangered marine mammals.
