The Town Council of Chesterton is considering increasing the motor vehicle excise tax and municipal wheel tax to help fund paving. The current proposal would cost residents $25 more for a passenger vehicle, $40 more for commercial vehicles, and $12.50 more for recreational vehicle owners. The increase would generate an estimated $344,732 per year, which could only be used for street paving. However, the council has been reluctant to increase the wheel tax due to the implementation of Senate Enrolled Act 1, which reduces property tax revenue for municipalities. The town is also applying for an Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI) grant to promote a linkage between the YMCA, Art Center and the downtown.
