Election officials work to reduce voter confusion before Louisiana’s closed party primaries

The May 16 statewide election in Louisiana is being held closed political party primaries, marking the first time in a long time that Louisiana has held such a period of open primaries. Darren Lombard, New Orleans clerk of Criminal Court and chief election official, said there has been some confusion about who can vote in these primaries and who will still be able to vote in the May 16 primaries if they take certain steps. The registration deadline for these elections is April 15. However, registration can still be changed if you change your party at any time. No Party voters who cast their ballots in person can choose between the Democratic candidates' slate or the Republican.
