Alaska's first Territorial Legislature took place in 1913, with members Conrad Freeding, Thomas Gaffney and Frank Aldrich making an arduous journey from Nome to Juneau. The Legislature passed 84 bills, mostly progressive in spirit, including women’s suffrage seven years before it was granted nationally. They also established a board of medical examiners, a recordkeeping record keeping, statistics, public contract language, wills, and court orders. The legislators praised Alaska and promised to work hard, but also expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government's disinterested management of Alaska. The journey was not the longest, with Rep. James C. Kennedy of Candle receiving the most mileage, earning him $1,001.25.
