Tumblr users were left scrambling after dozens of accounts were banned by an automated system on Wednesday afternoon, causing confusion among users. The incident disproportionately impacted accounts run by users who identify as trans women, many of whom were given no specific reason for their termination. The bans were confirmed by head of communications at Tumblr parent company Automattic, who confirmed many were in error and had been reversed. The issue arose a day after Tumblr reversed a controversial change to its reblogging system, which sparked outrage among many of its users. This incident is not the first time Tumblr has run into issues with automated content moderation, with a previous settlement with New York City's Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) over discrimination allegations stemming from an adult content ban in 2018 that reportedly disproportionately affected LGBTQ+ content.
