Jarren Duran, a baseball player for the Red Sox, made an inappropriate gesture during a 6-0 loss in Minnesota during a game against the Minnesota Red Sox. The incident occurred during the fifth inning of the game, when Duran had just grounded out and was headed back to the dugout. He claimed he heard a fan tell him to kill himself. Duran has previously spoken about his mental health struggles several times, including an attempt to commit suicide after difficult initial big-league stints in 2021 and 2022. He also served a two-game suspension in August 2024 after yelling a homophobic slur at a heckler during a Red Sox-Astros game.
