Box Office: ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Scores Massive $34 Million Opening Day

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel to the popular video game, has made a strong start at the box office, grossing $34 million domestically on its opening day. This is the biggest opening day of the year to date and comes less than two weeks after Project Hail Mary set the record with $33.1 million. The Universal-owned Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo partnered to bring the adaptation of the game to the big screen. The film is expected to gross $186 million for the five-day domestic opening and potentially reach a total of $200 million, on par with Super Mario’s $204.6 million over the same holiday period.
