Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) has written to Energy Secretary Chris Wright asking for details on plans to provide oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPP) as pump prices rise. The Energy Department plans to distribute 172 million barrels of crude from the reserve, part of a wider release of 400 million barrels from various member governments of the International Energy Agency. The move is part of an "exchange" where companies will return borrowed oil with additional barrels as a "premium." This will strengthen the SPR while stabilizing markets at no cost to American taxpayers.
