Virginia Beach's adult foster care program, which has been operating since 2008, is looking for more families to help in the city's foster care programs. The program caters to individuals with physical or mental disabilities who may need assistance with meal preparation or medication monitoring. It is a state-run program that gives adults with disabilities the feeling of living in a home-like setting as an alternative to assisted living facilities. Families must pass a background check and a fire marshal check to provide 24-hour support and supervision, and can house up to three adults at a time. Currently, eight families are participating and Virginia Beach Adult and Aging Division Program Administrator Wendy Swallow hopes to have at least four more.
