Celebrating Holi - the Hindu festival brings its array of colours to India and elsewhere

The Hindu festival of the day, known as Holi, is celebrated across India and is most popular in northern and eastern states. Participants offer prayers, throw bright colours on their friends and family, and celebrate with traditional food and sweets. The festival is based on the Hindu legend of Holika, who attempted to kill her nephew because he worships Vishnu. Many believe the festival honours the love of Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. The Indian diaspora also celebrates Holi.
