A proposal by the New York City Council would gradually increase the city's minimum wage from $17 to $30 an hour, creating the most ambitious wage floor ever attempted by a major U.S. city. Large employers with more than 500 workers would reach the $30 threshold by 2030, while smaller businesses will have until 2032 to comply. The legislation, known as the NewYork City Minimum Wage Act, would be implemented on a phased schedule with large employers moving to $20 an hour in 2027, $23 in 2028, $26 in 2029 and $30 in 2030. However, some business owners have expressed concerns about rising payroll costs and potential increased employee costs. The bill's future remains uncertain as New York State currently sets the minimum wage.
