In 1926, Nationwide Insurance, a small Ohio-based insurer, became the nation's third largest mutual insurance company. The company, which employs over 22,000 people and ranks 72nd on Fortune 500, started as an extension of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and focused on protecting Ohio farmers' cars. It expanded into other states in 1928 and expanded its business model into home, fire, and life insurance by 1935. In 1950, the company became Nationwide, becoming the company after splitting from the Ohiofarm Bureau Federation in 1948. Nationwide's official centennial is April 14, the anniversary of when it wrote its first policy as the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. Its iconic jingle, "Nationwide is on your side," was penned by composer Steve Karmen of Elsmere Music. The insurance company also supports driver safety initiatives as early as the 1930s.
