Director Hagai Levi has produced a six-episode Holocaust series, Etty, based on the diaries of Etty Hillesum. The series places a modern spin on a Holocaust story in Amsterdam, setting it in a "contemporary" Amsterdam. Despite not being rooted in a specific period period, Levi believes this is the end of period pieces. He also criticizes some recent Holocaust projects for being too period, too particular, and not considering how their experiences apply to our lives. The show was heavily influenced by Jonathan Glazer's Oscar-winning 2023 movie The Zone of Interest. Levi's desire to make the show more contemporary and more selective, and he was extremely selective about casting the costumes and writing in a contemporary language.
