Smith argued that the Iran conflict is negatively affecting his 2024 base and predicted that Democrats will take over in the 2026 midterms. He also suggested that no potential administration candidate could win the next presidential election in 2028. Recent surveys have found most Americans are against U.S. involvement in the Iran war, with 49% of respondents surveyed disapproving and 21% approving. Smith warned that the war appears to be a "clear disaster" for Trump, which will further divide his base even more. Former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent resigned from the administration over the war, stating in his resignation letter that a "misinformation campaign" by Israel influenced him to act.
