Alabama Republicans have approved legislation directing the governor to schedule new primary elections under a GOP-friendly congressional map if the courts allow it. The legislation would not affect unless the courts reverse a previous ruling requiring Alabama to have a second district where Black voters make up close to a majority, which led to Rep. Shomari Figures' election in 2024. This move comes after the Supreme Court declared Louisiana's congressional map an illegal gerrymander. The Republican redistricting effort has faced resistance from state Democrats and Black lawmakers.
