Illinois state legislator, Democratic Illinois State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, has introduced legislation to prevent police from using facial recognition technology to solve crimes. The bill, HB5521, would prohibit law enforcement agencies from obtaining, retain, possess, access, request, use or enter into an agreement with a third party, State or local government agency, or federal agency, to use a biometric identification system. The legislation aims to prevent the use of such technology in criminal investigations. Cassidy argues that it exacerbates problems such as lock up too many individuals who are kept too long and make it difficult for them to reintegrate into society.
