KVIA has obtained numerous emails and text chains detailing the confusion surrounding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) closure of the airspace over El Paso and near Santa Teresa in February. The first mention of the closure came just before 9:30 p.m. on February 10th, when local air traffic control informed the airport operations manager about the closure. The texts, which also detail the cause, were sent through open records requests by ABC-7 Content Manager Lesley Engle. The airport made it's first public post about the airspace shutdown shortly after midnight, with multiple early morning messages from concerned or confused people connected to the airport. The FAA issued a notice to airmen and lifted the airspace closure just before 7 a.m., highlighting ongoing efforts to counter potential UAS threats emanating from Mexico.
