The Colorado legislature's attempt to engage with artificial intelligence (AI) in the face of AI was criticized as being overly obsessed with "algorithmic discrimination," a term that all algorithms discriminate in some way. The state's first attempt at engaging with AI was Senate Bill 205, which was passed in 2024, which led to the departure of successful AI company Palantir, which left for Florida. The legislature postponed implementation of SB-205 and instead convened a politician-free AI working group to come up with a proposal for a better law. The working group's proposed legislation is much better than SB 205, emphasizing issues like disclosure and transparency instead. However, the tension between SB 205 and the AI group is seen as part of a larger battle for the soul of the Democratic Party, focusing on turning envy policy into moral superiority and focusing on wealth redistribution.
