A new campaign led by community initiative Rumbo aims to cool down the oppressive heat in Maryvale, Arizona, which led to 430 heat-related deaths in the previous year. The survey revealed that over 300 Maryvale residents identified the need for shade, heat-proofed public spaces, and shaded parking as key issues. Rumbo founder Luis Ávila is working to connect residents with pre-existing resources and educate them about how to lower their utility bills. The campaign also aims to connect people with tree-planting resources and advise the city and nonprofits on "more equitable places" where these programs should focus. The coalition has ambitious plans to transform areas that could become major destinations in the Valley.
