The Supreme Court has heard the administration's appeal against a decision by a lower court to block a directive by President Trump that allows for birthright citizenship. The court's 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump. The lower court had found that the president's order inconsistent with the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to virtually anyone born on U.S. soil, with narrow exceptions including the children of foreign diplomats or members of an enemy occupying force. However, the court's Chief Justice, Robert Sauer, dismissed the claim by the administration that "birth tourism" is a reason for the longstanding interpretation of the citizenship provision. The ruling is expected to be finalised by the end of June.
