The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom's sanctuary policies following the arrest of Wilfredo Jose Tortolero-Arriechi, accused of stabbing 51-year-old Alberto Rangel inside Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital on Dec. 4. The attack occurred as Rangel was being escorted out of the hospital. On Dec. 11, ICE requested that local authorities not release the suspect, citing his previous arrest record. DHS's acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis blamed federal policy on the Biden administration's open-border policies. She called on California Governor Newsom to commit to not releasing the murderer from jail.
