All of Penn must be fixed: Station needs passenger areas and train sections redone

The three bids for rebuilding Penn Station are due on Thursday, with the passenger areas and train sections being redone. The focus is on improving the platforms and tracks. Andy Byford, the former Train Daddy of the Transit Authority, is leading Amtrak’s Penn project and will decide on the winner. The MTA declined a seat on the committee due to its parts of Penn are in good shape and protected by a long-term lease with Amtrak. The recommended winner will be presented for ratification to the Amtrak board in mid-May and then it will go to the White House for final approval. The Regional Plan Association, a nonprofit group promoting the Gateway boondoggle, has criticized the plan for a new stub-end terminal south of Penn on Block 780, demolishing a neighborhood.
