Researchers from Azienda-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia in Italy have found that end-of-life dreams and visions, or ELDVs, are often recurring throughout life. The most frequently reported experiences involved reunions with deceased family members, friends, and pets. Researchers believe these experiences provide psychological relief for the dying to process what's coming through imagery rather than words. Despite these vivid dreams, some patients reported deeply disturbing images, which may indicate unresolved fear and conflict and unmet emotional or clinical needs. This study is the first to specifically study the sleep visions of the terminally ill, as opposed to near-death experiences in people who survived.
