Shortage of air traffic controllers triggers heavy delays at San Diego airport

San Diego International Airport was experiencing heavy delays due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. The airport automatically slows flights if the number of controllers falls below a certain level, according to Federal Aviation Administration rules. As of 5 p.m., the airport had 171 delays and two cancellations. The delays are expected to last until about 1 a.m. Friday. This comes after a recent crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport left two pilots dead and raises concerns about air traffic control staffing issues. The five-week partial government shutdown has resulted in significantly longer security lines and increased travel costs.
